Position: Application Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Application Engineer that has the ability to perform in a dynamic environment. The primary responsibility of the person in this position will be to assist and support existing and potential customers in the selection, application and commissioning of the proper precision gearing products that deliver the optimum solution for the customer’s machine and process applications. To further leverage their product knowledge, this individual will organize, create and provide the information, tools and training necessary for the effective sales and support of NIDEC-SHIMPO products in the market. In addition to directly supporting our customers and sales team, the applications engineer will provide valuable feedback to the company management and R&D organization to enhance existing products and develop appropriate new products for the target customer markets.

This position will be based out of our North American Headquarters in Glendale Heights, Illinois.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide answers to technical questions from distributors, OEMs and end users, as well as NIDEC-SHIMPO sales, customer service and other department personnel concerning the proper and optimum sizing and selection of the full range of gearing products offered by NIDEC-SHIMPO.
  • Analyze customer requirements, then develop and write formal technical specifications and proposals for the application and integration of the optimum products to meet their needs.
  • Prepare formal presentation material and assist in giving product demonstrations and presentations at customer sites, trade show exhibitions and on-site at our facility when customers visit. Occasionally travel on joint-calls with or without sales force to facilitate sales or post-sales cycle.
  • Continuously work with sales groups to gauge marketability of features and demand for products. Study growing trends in the market and make product development recommendations in line with company strategies.
  • Investigate competitive product features and performance to identify technical strengths and weaknesses as they relate to our respective products and solutions.
  • Evaluate changes to designs, implement adaptations and develop appropriate supportive documents for existing as well as new products within the NIDEC-SHIMPO portfolio. Communicate as needed with global headquarters in Japan to facilitate the approval of new products or product modifications.
  • Create and maintain bills of material; change BOMs as needed, and update price lists. Maintain repair parts drawings and modifications requirements.
  • Work with engineering and sales groups to recognize and diagnose chronic problems and failure mechanisms and provide solutions to improve product quality and performance.
  • Interact with marketing services department in the technological and informational development of product catalogs and literature, instruction and operating manuals and the company website.
  • Properly document and submit warranty/repair procedures and cost to enhance efficiency, profitability, and excellent customer service.
  • Participate in meetings, seminars and training sessions to stay appraised of new developments in the field. Acquire new technology skills through attendance at in-house training seminars as well as commercial or academic training courses.
  • Maintain discretion with and confidentiality of all company related information.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents, schematics, diagrams, electrical circuits and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as calculus, differential equations, analytic geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, 3D Modeling Software, enterprise resource planning software, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software. Willingness to learn proprietary sizing and selection software programs provided by outside parties.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and co-workers via telephone, email and in-person communications. Strong written and verbal communication skills with a minimal fear of public speaking.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of complex issues simultaneously and to follow through to completion.
  • Attention to detail and desire for accuracy combined with strong organizational and time management skills. Initiative and desire to contribute to company goals.
  • Ability to travel and work additional hours as necessary and appropriate.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably ME or EE) or equivalent plus at least five years of experience in a related industry.

Position: Inside Sales/Customer Service Representative

We are seeking a highly motivated, self-driven team player that has the ability to perform in a dynamic environment. This individual will serve as a primary point of contact providing effective customer service support for all internal and external NIDEC-SHIMPO customers by utilizing excellent, in-depth knowledge of company products and programs as well as team members within the technical support group. Additionally, they will also engage in proactive outbound prospecting campaigns within an assigned territory. The Inside Sales Representative is ultimately responsible for establishing and maintaining long-term customer relationships and customer satisfaction.

This position will be based out of our North American Headquarters in Glendale Heights, Illinois.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process all sales orders; prepping, processing and acknowledging orders within 24hours of receipt. This includes managing customer blanket orders and web portals as necessary.
  • Provide first level of technical support to distributor, OEM and end user accounts.
  • Answer all incoming pre and post-sale customer inquiries; customer account setup, expedite requests, cancellations, pricing or stock checks, order status/tracking within 24-48 hours.
  • Maintain a high level of order accuracy, with a minimal amount of order entry error.
  • Handle customer requests for credit, returns, warranty and repair. Prepare Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) documents to be sent to the customer.
  • Partner with Regional Sales Managers, Applications Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and operations team to meet and exceed the customer’s service expectations. Be the primary liaison between the customer, salesperson, engineering, material control departments.
  • Confer with production, shipping, warehouse or parent headquarters to track product shipments.
  • Prepare customer quotations and follow up with the customer or appropriate sales/application engineer. Monitor sales activities on a regular basis to stay up to date on territory activities.
  • Establish and maintain customer records in CRM and/or ERP systems, including accounts/contacts, notes, leads, opportunities, quotations and other information for efficient handling of responsibilities.
  • Assist with various projects as directed by the Inside Sales Manager.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Strong customer orientation, including the ability to understand and be empathetic to their needs and expectations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from OEM customers, distributors and internal salespeople via telephone, email and in-person communications. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other inter-company departments, clearly communicating customer needs and expectations internally within the organization. Team mentality.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of complex issues simultaneously and to follow through to completion. Creatively develop solutions to challenging problems.
  • Detail oriented – must have a keen eye for purchase order details, i.e. shipping methods and customer addresses, payment terms, pricing, products, etc.
  • Solid time management skills; ability to organize and manage multiple priorities at a high level.
  • Knowledge of MRP/ERP and CRM systems, with capacity to quickly learn new systems. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Motion Control industry knowledge, including basic knowledge of servomotors and gearboxes, a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma + 2 Year College or University degree. Minimum 3 years experience in customer service.
